Personalization

The History of the Turban and the Fez is an informative journey through the ancient origins, cultural development, beauty, symbolism, and proper wearing of two of the world’s most distinguished forms of headwear.

Prime Minister NGSKS: Durriyyah Bey presents the history in chronological order while examining the powerful connection between the turban, the fez, Moorish heritage, nationality, identity, dignity, and nationhood.

Readers will explore the beauty of the woman’s turban and the complete 360-degree circle created through head wrapping, representing high degrees, knowledge, spiritual elevation, and protection. The book also discusses the woman’s hair as a spiritual antenna, the hair chakra, and the traditional belief that properly covering the head protects her energy from negative influences.

The fez is examined through its history, construction, sacred form, and symbolic meaning. Readers will learn about Figure One as a representation of the nation; the fez as a symbol of the mother; the center attachment as a representation of the mother’s breast and nipple; and the nine ventilation openings as symbols of completion. The meaning of three sets of nine—9 + 9 + 9 = 27—is also explored.

Special attention is given to the proper way to wear both the turban and the fez, including the placement and movement of the fez tassel. These honored coverings are presented as more than articles of clothing. They are expressions of cultural memory, sacred knowledge, identity, protection, dignity, and Moorish heritage.

Rich in historical information and cultural teachings, The History of the Turban and the Fez encourages readers to understand what they wear, why they wear it, and the knowledge carried through these enduring traditions.

Written and compiled by Prime Minister NGSKS: Durriyyah Bey.
